PROFESSIONAL INTRUDER ALARMS

An Alarm Should Be Designed Around the Property

A burglar alarm is only as good as its design. Where the entry points are, how the building is used, who needs to set and unset it and what should happen when it activates all shape the right system. Supplying a box of equipment doesn’t answer those questions; a survey does.

Systems range from straightforward wireless alarms for homes to larger wired or hybrid intruder alarms for commercial premises, with professional monitoring available where the risk or an insurer calls for it.

WHO WE PROTECT

Home and Commercial Intruder Alarms

Home Burglar Alarms

For houses and flats, protection is planned around the ways in, the rooms that matter and how the household lives day to day.

  • Houses, flats and extensions
  • Garages and outbuildings where suitable
  • Detection planned around pets
  • App control and panic functionality where required

Commercial Burglar Alarms

For offices, shops, warehouses and industrial premises, systems are designed around opening hours, the areas that need separate control and the people using them.

  • Larger wired and hybrid systems
  • Separate areas and multiple users
  • Grade 2 and Grade 3 systems where appropriate
  • Professional monitoring options

EXISTING SYSTEMS

Upgrades, replacements and takeovers

We upgrade and replace older alarms, and can take over servicing of some systems installed by other companies where we’re familiar with the equipment and it is in suitable condition. We’ll confirm what’s possible once we’ve inspected it.

CHOOSING YOUR SYSTEM

Wired, Wireless or Hybrid?

None of these is the best choice for every property. The building, existing cabling, the level of protection needed and how much disruption is acceptable all point towards the right option.

Wireless alarms

Detectors and sounders communicate with the control panel by radio, so very little cabling is needed and devices can be positioned where they work best.

Often suits: many existing homes and occupied premises where running new cables would be disruptive.

Worth knowing: devices run on batteries, which need checking and replacing periodically.

Wired alarms

Each device is cabled back to the control panel, giving a permanent, dependable connection that doesn’t rely on batteries in every detector.

Often suits: commercial premises, larger systems, new builds, refurbishments and buildings where cabling is practical.

Worth knowing: installation involves running cables, so access and finishing need planning.

Hybrid alarms

A wired panel with wireless devices added where cabling isn’t practical, combining the strengths of both.

Often suits: upgrades, extensions and properties where part of the building is easy to cable and part isn’t.

Worth knowing: it can make good use of existing wiring while still reaching awkward areas.

Our survey establishes which approach suits the property, and we’ll explain the reasoning before you decide.

DETECTION & PROTECTION

Detection, Signalling and Control

An alarm system is a combination of detection, signalling and control. Depending on the property and the level of protection required, that can include:

  • Movement detection covering the rooms and routes an intruder would use
  • Door and window contacts to detect entry at the point it happens
  • Pet-aware detection, positioned and set up with animals in mind
  • Internal and external sounders, including a visible deterrent outside
  • Panic functionality where a quick way to raise the alarm is needed
  • Separate areas, so parts of a building can be set independently
  • App notifications and, where specified, monitored signalling

WHEN THE ALARM ACTIVATES

What Happens When the Alarm Is Triggered?

This is one of the most important choices when specifying an alarm, and it affects the equipment, the grade of system and the ongoing cost.

SELF-MONITORED

Audible and app alerts

The system sounds locally and, depending on how it is configured, sends notifications to authorised users’ phones. You and your nominated contacts decide how to respond.

  • No monitoring contract
  • Sounders act as a visible and audible deterrent
  • Notifications to authorised users where the system supports it

PROFESSIONALLY MONITORED

Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC)

Signals are transmitted to an Alarm Receiving Centre, which follows the response arrangements agreed for the installation. Depending on the system and service specified, this can include contacting keyholders and, where the system qualifies, requesting a police response.

  • Monitoring is an additional ongoing cost
  • Police response is not included with every alarm
  • Monitored systems require regular servicing

We’ll explain the options and their costs during the survey so the response matches the risk.

SMARTPHONE CONTROL

Control Your Alarm from Your Phone

Most of the systems we install can be managed through an app, subject to the equipment and a suitable connection. Useful day-to-day functions include:

  • Setting and unsetting the system, where configured
  • Checking whether the alarm is set and seeing its status
  • Notifications when the alarm activates or a fault occurs
  • Adding and removing authorised users

We set this up at handover and make sure the people who need access know how to use it.

EXISTING ALARMS

Upgrading or Replacing an Existing Alarm

Common reasons customers contact us about an existing alarm:

  • Obsolete equipment or parts that are hard to replace
  • Unreliable components or repeated faults
  • No app control
  • Alterations or extensions to the property
  • A need for additional detection
  • A change in monitoring requirements

Sometimes parts of the existing installation, such as cabling or detectors, can be kept or repaired and the system upgraded. Sometimes replacement is the better investment. We’ll give you an honest recommendation after inspecting it.

OUR ALARM SYSTEMS

Ajax, Hikvision AX PRO, Risco and Texecom Alarms

Ajax alarm equipment including a control hub, keypad, sounder, detectors and the mobile app

We install systems from established manufacturers rather than putting every customer on one platform. The choice depends on the property, whether a wired, wireless or hybrid system suits it best, and the features and monitoring you need.

Ajax

A wireless system run through the Ajax app. Very little cabling is needed, so it suits occupied homes and businesses where disruption matters. Setting, unsetting, alerts and user management are all handled from your phone.

Hikvision AX PRO

A wireless alarm managed in the Hik-Connect app, the same app used for Hikvision cameras. It’s a natural fit where you have, or are planning, Hikvision CCTV, because the alarm and cameras can be checked in one place.

Risco

Available as wired, wireless or hybrid systems, which makes it flexible for both homes and commercial premises. Hybrid is particularly useful when upgrading a building that already has some alarm cabling.

Texecom

One of the most widely installed alarm brands in the UK, in wired, wireless and hybrid versions. It’s a common choice for commercial premises and larger systems with several areas and users, with app control available.

Already have one of these systems? We service, repair and upgrade existing Ajax, Hikvision, Risco and Texecom alarms. We can also take over some systems installed by other companies once we’ve inspected them and confirmed they’re in suitable condition.

05

Ongoing Support

Servicing, maintenance and fault support when you need them.

SERVICING & MAINTENANCE

Keeping Your Alarm Reliable

Professionally monitored systems require regular servicing in accordance with the monitoring and system requirements.

For non-monitored systems, and wireless systems in particular, we recommend an annual service so batteries, detectors, signalling and general operation can be checked before problems develop. It isn’t compulsory, but a planned visit can avoid the cost and inconvenience of a later callout just to replace batteries or deal with a preventable fault.

  • Battery checks and replacement
  • Detector and contact testing
  • Sounder and signalling checks
  • Control panel and power supply checks
  • Fault investigation

YOUR QUESTIONS

Burglar Alarm Questions

Straightforward answers to the questions we are asked most often.

Should I choose a wired or wireless burglar alarm?

It depends on the property. Wireless suits many existing homes and premises because little cabling is needed; wired often suits commercial and larger systems where cabling is practical; hybrid combines both. We’ll recommend an option after the survey.

Can I control my burglar alarm from my phone?

Most of the systems we install support app control, subject to the equipment and a suitable connection. Depending on how it is set up, you can set and unset the system, check its status and receive notifications.

Can you install an alarm if I have pets?

Yes. Detection can be selected and positioned with pets in mind. Tell us about your animals during the survey so we can plan around them.

Do you offer monitored burglar alarms?

Yes. Suitable systems can be connected to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). Monitoring is an additional ongoing cost, and monitored systems require regular servicing.

Can a burglar alarm have police response?

Only where the system and monitoring service are specified to qualify for it. Police response isn’t included with every alarm, so we’ll explain the requirements if it’s something you need.

Do burglar alarms need servicing?

Monitored systems require regular servicing. For non-monitored systems we recommend an annual service to check batteries, detectors and signalling, although it isn’t compulsory.

Can you upgrade or take over my existing alarm?

Often, yes. We can upgrade or replace older systems, and take over servicing of some third-party systems where we’re familiar with the equipment and it is in suitable condition. We’ll confirm after inspecting it.

What is a Grade 2 or Grade 3 alarm?

Intruder alarms are graded by the level of risk they’re designed for. Grade 2 is typical for most homes and many lower-risk businesses; Grade 3 is used for higher-risk premises. If your insurer has specified a grade, let us know and we’ll design the system to suit.
